In prokaryotes (microorganisms and archaea), translation occurs within the cytosol, where the massive and modest subunits in the ribosome bind towards the mRNA. In eukaryotes, translation takes place while in the cytoplasm or across the membrane on the endoplasmic reticulum inside a system referred to as co-translational translocation.
